Contour, a front-wheel-drive sedan that is smaller than the Taurus,
may have a short future. Production of the similar Mercury Mystique
ends Dec. 23, and the Kansas City, Mo., plant that builds the Mystique
and Contour will convert to production of a new car-based sport
utility vehicle.

Ford's biggest passenger car and its Mercury Grand Marquis twin are
the last of a genre that was once mainstream: full-size, V-8 powered
rear-drive family sedans. With the exception of some luxury vehicles,
the full-size segment is now dominated by front-drive rivals.

As its major change for 2000, the best-selling full-size van gains
standard antilock brakes for all its models. The standard antilock
system covers all four wheels and replaces a rear antilock feature
that was standard on cargo models in 1999.

Escort has been Ford's best-selling small car since 1981, but the
company expects the new Focus to take over that role. Escort continues
as a four-door sedan and sporty ZX2 coupe. The station wagon is gone,
and the sedan now comes in a single price level. Ford has not said how
long it will continue offering the Escort alongside the Focus, which
was designed in Europe and will be sold worldwide.

The Excursion is Ford's newest and the industry's biggest sport
utility, measuring nearly 19 feet from stem to stern. That makes it
about 20 inches longer than the Ford Expedition and more than seven
inches longer than the Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon XL, formerly
the biggest SUVs.

Ford's full-size sport utility vehicle debuted as a 1997 model and was
built off the F-Series pickup chassis. The Lincoln Navigator is the
Expedition's luxurious corporate twin and in 2000 offered a more
powerful engine, standard leather upholstery and some convenience
features not offered on the Expedition.

The most popular SUV is a carryover from 1999, when it was among the
top five vehicles in sales. The Mercury Mountaineer is a clone of the
Explorer but comes only in a four-door body style, while the Explorer
also comes as a two-door sport model. Explorer buyers can choose from
three engines, and Mountaineer buyers from two.

The Super Duty models are the brutes among Ford's pickups ?
heavy-duty trucks designed for serious hauling and towing. The Super
Duty line was redesigned for 1999, and though it is based on the
F-150, it sports different styling, roomier interiors and stronger
chassis and engines.

Ford has big plans for the Focus, a new small car that invades the
United States this year. Already a hit in Europe, where it was
designed, Ford expected Focus to replace the Escort as its high-volume
small car. The Escort sold in the United States was jointly engineered
with Mazda, while a different Escort was sold in Europe and other
markets. The same Focus design will be used worldwide, and Ford will
build more than 1 million annually at full production, with about
300,000 for the United States. Focus comes in three body styles ?
four-door sedan, two-door hatchback and station wagon ? wrapped in
edgy styling that gives these new models a unique appearance.

Ford's most popular car receives major safety, styling and interior
changes for 2000, giving the Taurus a more conventional appearance
than the 1996 through 1999 models. The Mercury Sable, which is built
from the same design, gets similar changes. The front-wheel drive
Taurus and Sable are available as four-door sedans and as station
wagons.

Power-adjustable pedals and a rear-seat video entertainment system are
new options on Ford's front-wheel-drive minivan. With the power
pedals, the accelerator and brake pedals adjust within a four-inch
range to help drivers attain a more comfortable position. Ford also
offers this feature on some of its cars and sport utility vehicles.
